AIM

AIM’s members range from the largest, most respected record labels and associated music businesses in the world to self-releasing artists and the next generation of entrepreneurs in music. AIM promotes the sector globally and provides a range of services, commercial opportunities and practical help to members.

Arts Council England

Arts Council England are the national development agency for creativity and culture. ACE want to grow skills, knowledge and networks to help establish the conditions in which creativity and culture can flourish across the country.  Below are two funding streams offered through Arts Council England:

National Lottery Project Grants is an open access programme for arts, museums and libraries projects. The fund supports thousands of individual artists, community and cultural organisations.

Developing Your Creative Practice encourages ambitious work from independent creative practitioners. This programme specifically supports independent creative practitioners, who can apply for grants of up to £10,000.

Help Musicians UK

Help Musicians is an independent UK charity for professional musicians of all genres, from starting out through to retirement.

They help at times of crisis, but also at times of opportunity, giving people the extra support they need at a crucial stage that could make or break their career.

Higher Rhythm

Based in Doncaster, Higher Rhythm has provided music and media opportunities and services across the Yorkshire region and beyond since 2001. Higher Rhythm’s offer includes recording, studios, a radio station, courses (including further and higher education), artist development programmes, live events and volunteering opportunities.

If you want to grow a sustainable career in the music industry, Higher Rhythm provides a hub of services and opportunities that anyone at any level can access, with support on-hand from experienced industry professionals.

Musicians Union

Membership is currently £227 per year. If you’re a student you can join for £20 per year. Benefits include Public Liability Insurance as well as basic equipment insurance. Whether you choose to become a member or not their website has some helpful general information for musicians at every level.

Music Venues Trust

Music Venue Trust is a charity which acts to protect, secure and improve Grassroots Music Venues, aiming to secure the long-term future of these venues which have played a crucial role in the development of British music. The MVT aim to preserve and improve venues, making them more efficient and improving the experience for performers and audiences.

FREE to join! Collects royalties on behalf of the performer(s) on any recording. If you are self- releasing you need to registers as BOTH a performer and a rights holders. For example, if you sang backing vocals on another bands track music and it gets released, then the label should register you as ‘backing vocals’. This means you will receive performer royalties if that track is played on the radio or similar. However, you must be a member to receive this.

PRS For Music

Collects on behalf of the songwriter(s) on any recording. Log your live performances with PRS and receive a fee. Songwriters are advised to register all their original songs with PRS, new and old. There is a £100 one-off joining fee for life-time membership.
