Music:Leeds and Abbey House Museum are commissioning a Leeds-based music creator, sound artist or collective to create a new sound-based artwork or audio-focused ‘digital experience’ inspired by the Sounds of Our City exhibition at Abbey House Museum

Sounds of Our City at Abbey House Museum tells the story of how the different musical styles and places of Leeds interact. Within the exhibition you can discover fascinating instruments and sound equipment made in Leeds, explore the different venues associated with music in the city over the past 200 years and relive some of the city’s most iconic performances through the memorabilia featured.

While the exhibition has been forced to close its doors to the public throughout most of 2019, much of the content is now featured online, and it will remain on display at Abbey House until the end of 2021.

For this commission, we encourage cross-discipline collaboration – audio, visual, digital, literary, spoken word etc – but the finished work must have audio as its main focus. The commission must produce a professional, high quality audio recording (and video if relevant).

The work will be hosted on Music:Leeds and Abbey House websites and social media channels, with a feature premiere to discuss the work alongside Kitty Ross, Curator of Social History at Abbey House Museum.

Artists eligible for the commission, must be resident in Leeds City Region / West Yorkshire (Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds or Wakefield local authority areas).

There is a budget of £3k to complete this commission (sorry, salary wage is incompatible for format!)
Please submit your idea via our website, including a proposed budget breakdown, by the end Monday 7th December 2020.
We anticipate informing successful artist(s) w/ 4th January 2021 for the project to premier w/c 1st March 2021.
We actively welcome applicants who are currently under-represented in music: women and minority genders, anyone with a Black, Asian or ethnically diverse background, who self-identifies as LGBTQIA+, from lower socio-economic backgrounds and/or self-identifies as disabled.
